Those who know Julie Macklowe will tell you that she is the one to call in New York if you want to go out, let your hair down and have some good old fashioned fun. But don’t let that fool you. This tomboy sports addict dressed in haute couture is also a serious philanthropist and businesswoman, a former hedge fund manager turned beauty entrepreneur with her own skincare line called vbeauté. This avid, expert traveler escapes New York with her husband and daughter whenever possible to spend some downtime in Aspen, a place that is truly home to her.

YOU OWN A HOME IN ASPEN… WHAT HOTEL DO YOU RECOMMEND TO FRIENDS AND WHY?

I was born and raised in Aspen, but as an adult I have stayed in a lot of the hotels, have owned a few homes with my family and currently own a beautiful townhouse. As for hotels, The Little Nell is a classic and everyone loves the new Dancing Bear (a private residence club). For a lower-cost option, the Aspen Square’s location is hard to beat. That said, if you want a rugged party option, I always love the Sky Hotel

BEST RESTAURANTS FOR PEOPLE WATCHING

Cloud 9 on the top of Highlands is bar none the best lunchtime spot to spray champagne and get crazy. In the evening, Mezzaluna is always a hot spot; Jimmys for the bar scene and I love Justice Snow’s.

BEST RESTAURANTS FOR FOOD

Cache Cache is the best place in town, hands down.

BEST BARS FOR APRÈS SKI

Sky Hotel or Little Nell if you like pumas (those are aged cougars).

FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP

All of Aspen is a giant Disneyland for adult shopping – favorite local shops are Nuages and Max for women’s clothes.

BEST SKI SHOP

Gorsuch at the base of Ajax. They have it all, usually.

BEST SPA

The St. Regis hotel has the best spa in town.

FAVORITE THING TO DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT SKIING BLACK DIAMONDS

I only ski double blacks or else it’s skiing the bunny slopes with my daughter, Zoe.

AJAX OR HIGHLANDS?

Highlands. Wake, hike the bowl, ski the Deep Temerity lift, then lunch at Cloud 9; life doesn’t get much better. If it’s freezing, Ajax is good.

AJAX TAVERN OR CLOUD 9?

Cloud 9 from 1-3pm then Ajax Tavern for après on a nice spring ski day – love the après scene.

SUMMER OR WINTER?

Both. Those who ski in Aspen fall in love, but once you go in summer you will want to move there!
