Marchay members are scattered all across America (and beyond!), so we’ve compiled a list of our favorite properties within just a few hours drive of some of the country’s major cities. Read on for close-to-home vacation inspiration, all of which reopened by July.

New York City:

Mayflower Inn, Washington, CT

Classic New England-style retreat complete with antique four poster beds and cozy fireplaces. The massive 20,000 square foot spa is a highlight as are the putting green, tennis court and pool during the summer months.

Ocean House, Westerly, RI

Ocean House has been a beachfront playground for guests whom “summer” was a verb since opening in 1868. With such an incredible variety of amenities such as foraging and cooking classes, squash courts, putting green, movies on the beach and lobster boils, there’s really no reason for guests to step off grounds. In an age of social distancing, the resort’s 2-7 bedroom cottages allow guests to take full advantage of these facilities while having their own private oasis.

Troutbeck, Amenia, NY

This 45 acre property on the eastern side of the Hudson Valley is at once easygoing, lavish and historic. The perfect day begins with a scenic hike or tennis match, followed by a dip in the pool and capped off lounging riverside in a hammock.

Glenmere Mansion, Chester, NY

On the opposite end of the Hudson Valley sits Glenmere Mansion, a Tuscan-inspired villa welcoming adults only. The hotel exudes sophistication with its immaculately manicured gardens, opulent suites and superb fine dining.

Four Seasons Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA

Guests need not leave this city oasis. Situated on the top 10 floors of Philly’s tallest building, the hotel is home to an iconic infinity pool, world class spa and two phenomenal dining outlets: Vernick Fish and Jean-Georges. Those looking to explore the city more are steps from the Barnes Foundation, Independence Hall and Rittenhouse Square.

Winvian Farm, Morris, CT

This Relais & Chateaux property in the Litchfield Hills draws foodies, wellness seekers and active couples looking for an easy romantic getaway. Each of the 19 standalone cottages are uniquely themed, such as the two-story Treehouse. While normally only open to families during certain weeks, Winvian Farm has adjusted policies and will welcome children daily through the end of 2021.


Boston:

Wheatleigh, Lenox, MA

With just 19 rooms set within an 1890s Italian-revival mansion, guests of Wheatleigh are afforded personalized service and a secluded hideaway in the Berkshires. The spectacular views over Stockbridge Bowl Lake inspire blissful relaxation.

Chatham Bars Inn, Chatham, MA

Chatham Bars Inn is an amenity-packed property with stunning views of the beach and classic New England charm. Multiple pools, an extensive kids’ club and 4 bedroom home options make it a popular choice for families, but travelers seeking a tranquil atmosphere can find peace and quiet in the Inn’s adults-only Spa Suites.

Cliff House, Cape Neddick, ME

As the name implies, Cliff House is an oceanfront retreat perched on Bald Head Cliff with panoramic views of the Atlantic. The surrounding region has a plethora of outdoor activities, such as lobstering, fishing and going to the beach in the summer, or cross-country skiing and beachfront snowshoeing in the winter (yes, Cliff House is open year round!). Families flock to the three bedroom Weare Cottage adjacent to the main property.

Twin Farms, Barnard, VT

The former estate of Sinclair Lewis and Dorothy Thompson, Twin Farms is a perennial favorite amongst members. All-inclusive is done right here: gourmet breakfast and lunch are followed by a multi-course dinner affair, including wine pairings naturally, in between which guests can partake in many outdoor adventures like hiking and fly-fishing. More than half of the 20 accommodations are free standing and set throughout the 300 acre property.

White Elephant Nantucket, Nantucket, MA

Composed of a harborside hotel, garden cottages, inn, residences and downtown lofts, White Elephant offers an accommodation that caters to virtually every traveler. With some of the East Coast’s best beaches, chic shops and restaurants, Nantucket is such a special island that although technically requires a drive plus ferry to get to, we couldn’t leave off this list.


Washington DC:

Sagamore Pendry, Baltimore, MD

Baltimore’s most happening neighborhood of Fell’s Point, became evermore bustling when the Sagamore Pendry opened in 2017 on the historic Rec Pier. Often overlooked, the city has one of the country’s best aquariums and fascinating historic sights like Fort McHenry. After a long day, unwind at the hotel’s iconic pool overlooking the harbor and city skyline.

Inn at Perry Cabin, St. Michaels, MD

This elegant waterfront property on Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay has 78 rooms and suites throughout the 19th century historic building and newer wings. Its prime location on the Miles River allows for activities like sailing and paddle boarding, while the Pete Dye designed Links at Perry Cabin will keep golfers happy.

Primland, Meadows of Dan, VA

Hiking, hunting, horseback riding and ATV riding are just some of the many outdoor pursuits available on Primland’s 12,000 acres near the Blue Ridge Mountains. The eco-friendly luxury lodge has 26 rooms, a farm-to-table restaurant and loads of unique outdoor activities like tomahawk throwing and tree climbing. We love the 2-7 bedroom mountain homes, most of which have sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Nemacolin, Farmington, PA

Looking to stay in a glitzy French chateau, model of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater or a super sleek 6 bedroom villa? Nemacolin’s massive complex is home to all plus a zoo, casino, two golf courses, ropes course with zip lining and rock climbing and even its own private airport.


Atlanta:

Montage Palmetto Bluff, Bluffton, SC

Southern-hospitality shines at this waterfront property along the May River. The hotel’s special amenities sprinkled throughout the stay are what make it so appealing: guests are greeted by the canine ambassadors and are invited to partake in lemonade and cookie “happy hour” and nightly s’mores. In addition to the hotel’s idyllic rooms, suites and cottages, there are over 30 multi-bedroom villas available for rent throughout the Palmetto Bluff community.

Blackberry Farm, Walland, TN

Blackberry Farm’s cult following adore this slice of Americana.  The noteworthy culinary program attracts foodies looking to interact with the resident gardener, cheese maker, beekeeper or brew-master. While all of the cozy accommodations are adorned with plush feather beds and fireplaces, our favorites are the 3-5 bedroom private homes, which have fully functioning kitchens and lovely patios.

Sea Island, Sea Island, GA

This grandiose property in the Golden Isles offers different accommodations that appeal to all travelers. The Cloister is the beachfront hotel that transports you to the Med, while The Lodge’s English manor vibes and location amidst the three golf courses make it perfect for adults. Larger groups should consider one of the many privately owned 1-8 bedroom cottages. The resort excels at kid-friendly activities from sand castle competitions to creating and decorating your own sugar cookies to building a stuffed animal.

Less than an hour from Charleston, Kiawah Island boasts some impressive facilities: 22 tennis courts, multiple pools, 10 miles of sandy beaches and a nature center complete with alligators, egrets and sometimes dolphins. The island is a golfer’s Shangri-La, with 5 different courses on property.

Nestled along Florida’s northeastern coast, the Ritz-Carlton is a low-key family-friendly paradise. Shaped like a horseshoe, the 8 floor property overlooks the exceptional Fernandina Beach. Ritz Kids keeps children busy with pirate treasure hunts and learning about sharks allowing parents to enjoy the 27,000 sq ft spa.


San Francisco:

Tucked in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, this sophisticated 45 room estate is known for its 260 acre Robert Trent Jones Jr. championship golf course. As one of the country’s oldest wine regions, non-golfers will enjoy exploring the hotel’s on-site winery.

Located in Sonoma, Napa’s more low-key sister valley, Farmhouse Inn delivers on all fronts with its bright and breezy rooms, gourmet meals and a serene wooded setting along the Russian River Valley.

Carmel Valley Ranch, Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA

This family-friendly property sits on 500 acres in the Santa Lucia Mountains. Activities abound from world-class golf and tennis to mountaintop yoga and gourmet cooking classes, from a splash zone pool for kids and honey harvesting at the apiary to the nearby Monterey Aquarium and charming town of Carmel.

Auberge du Soleil, Rutherford, CA

The French-inspired Auberge du Soleil indulges guests in luxurious suites with panoramic Napa vineyard views and a Michelin-starred restaurant. Enjoy a glass of local Chardonnay in one of the canopied cabanas by the pool or visit the hillside spa within the sculpture-laden grounds.

Just over 30 minutes from San Francisco, the Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay offers stunning rooms, views overlooking the Pacific and excellent outdoor facilities for swimming, surfing, hiking, tennis and golfing. The best rooms feature cozy fire pits on the patio where you can cuddle up with a good book and blanket.

Los Angeles:

Oozing 1920s-era Spanish Mediterranean grandeur, the Biltmore is an iconic resort overlooking Butterfly Bay. In an age of social distancing, it doesn’t get any better than one of the private bungalows with a plunge pool. The Coral Casino beach club is the ideal place for families to enjoy fun in the sun. Adults won’t want to miss out on cocktails at the Coral Reef Bar, which contains a 275-gallon saltwater aquarium.

This 100 acre resort suspended over dramatic cliffs is a destination unto itself.
